What is SEO and How does it work ?

 WHAT IS SEO ?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving a website to increase its visibility on search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo. The primary goal of SEO is to attract organic (unpaid) traffic by helping a website rank higher in search engine results for relevant keywords. SEO works by optimizing website content, structure, and technical performance so that search engines can easily crawl, index, and understand web pages. It includes on-page SEO (optimizing content, keywords, titles, headings, and images), off-page SEO (building high-quality backlinks and improving website authority), and technical SEO (enhancing site speed, mobile-friendliness, security, and crawlability). Effective SEO also focuses on providing valuable, relevant content that satisfies user search intent and delivers a positive user experience. Since search engine algorithms continually evolve, SEO requires ongoing monitoring, updates, and optimization. A well-executed SEO strategy increases website traffic, builds credibility, improves brand visibility, and supports long-term business growth.

HOW DOES IT WORK ?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) works by helping search engines discover, understand, and rank your website so it appears in relevant search results. Search engines like Google use automated systems and algorithms to evaluate millions of web pages and determine which ones best answer a user's query.

SEO works in three main stages:

1. Crawling

Crawling is the process by which search engines discover web pages.

  • Search engines use automated programs called web crawlers, spiders, or bots.
  • These bots visit websites and follow links from one page to another.
  • They collect information about the content, images, videos, and links on each page.

Example:

A crawler visits your homepage, then follows links to your blog, product pages, and contact page.

If a page cannot be crawled, it is unlikely to appear in search results.

2. Indexing

After crawling, the search engine analyzes the page and stores it in a large database called the search index.

During indexing, the search engine records information such as:

  • Page title
  • Headings
  • Keywords
  • Images
  • Videos
  • Meta description
  • Internal and external links
  • Structured data

Only indexed pages are eligible to appear in search results.

3. Ranking

When a user searches for a keyword, the search engine compares millions of indexed pages and ranks them based on hundreds of factors.

Common ranking factors include:

  • Relevance to the search query
  • High-quality, original content
  • Appropriate keyword usage
  • Website authority and backlinks
  • Fast page loading speed
  • Mobile-friendly design
  • Secure connection (HTTPS)
  • Positive user experience
  • Fresh and updated content

The pages that best satisfy the user's search intent are ranked higher.
